Why You Should Read in English Even If You’re Not a Native Speaker
It can be tough to motivate yourself to read in another language. English native speakers often struggle to do so, and I’m guessing non-native speakers will have an even harder time with this one. I’ve personally found that reading in English helps me with my writing skills, vocabulary, grammar and even pronunciation (if I’m doing anything else at the same time like watching TV or listening to music). Here are just some of the many benefits of reading in English, even if you don’t speak it as your first language!
Language skills are easier to learn than you think
Don’t worry if you’re not a native speaker of English. Reading in English can actually help you learn the language faster. When you read, you are exposed to new words and grammar structures that you can then use in your own writing. Plus, reading is a great way to improve your overall language skills.
There is no downside
Reading in English has countless benefits. It can improve your language skills, help you learn about other cultures, and make you more well-rounded and knowledgeable. And since reading is one of the best ways to improve your language skills, it’s a great way to become more proficient in English. So even if you’re not a native speaker, there’s no reason not to read in English. Try some good old fashioned American classics like Catcher in the Rye or To Kill a Mockingbird or go with something lighter like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games. But either way, get reading!
You can improve your accent
While you may not sound like a native speaker, reading out loud can help you improve your accent. This is because when you read, you are also pronouncing the words correctly. By reading aloud, you can learn the correct way to say words and improve your accent. Additionally, reading helps improve your vocabulary, which will also be helpful when speaking.
It will make you better at your native language
If you’re not a native speaker of English, you might think that reading in English is a waste of time. After all, why struggle through text that’s written in a language you don’t even understand?
