A Very Structured Approach to English Grammar

There are plenty of theories out there about how to best teach English grammar, but here we’ll go over a very defined approach that you can use if you have the time to work through your classes with this method. This approach involves separating parts of speech from each other and then slowly building on them one at a time until you have full understanding of the grammatical structure in question. Don’t worry, it doesn’t take as long as it sounds! Let’s get started!

Nouns
A noun is a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are the building blocks of sentences. They can be used as the subject or object of a verb, and they can be modified by adjectives. There are three main types of nouns: common, proper, and abstract.
Common nouns are words like boy or girl. Proper nouns are the names of specific people, places, or things (like John, Africa, or the Empire State Building). Abstract nouns represent concepts or ideas (like love or justice).

Verbs
In English, verbs are words that describe an action or a state of being. There are three main verb tenses: present, past, and future. Each tense has its own set of rules for conjugation, which is the process of changing a verb to agree with the subject of a sentence.

Prepositions
When it comes to learning English grammar, conjunctions are one of the most important parts of speech. They connect words, phrases, and clauses together to create complex sentences. The seven coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. Each has a different function and can be used in different ways.

Conjunctions
A conjunction is a word that joins two or more words, phrases, or clauses together. The most common conjunctions are and, but, or, and so.
